Ugly Duck is played on a 5×5 board with the following setup:

Players take turn to move their (ugly ducks) one step closer to the opponent base. They capture on the diagonals.

A reaching the opponent base is promoted to a (swan), which has the exact same movement pattern but in reverse.

The first player to safely return a to her home base wins!
